Lisa Goodman, LCSW, is a seasoned Licensed Clinical Social Worker who comes to the Counseling and Wellness Center of Pittsburgh’s South Hills office with 20+ years of professional counseling experience. She has experience working in home, community, and hospital settings. Working primarily with children and families at the outset of her career, Lisa’s skills have since expanded to include multiple specialties in: grief and loss, trauma, mood disorders (anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder), self-esteem and body image, pregnancy and postpartum depression, and domestic violence/relationship distress.
Lisa demonstrates a keen attention and commitment to the clients she serves. While her therapy approach is influenced by person-centered and family systems theory, she empowers clients to determine the focus and direction of the therapy. Lisa adheres to the three principles of self-advocacy: know yourself, know what you need, and know how to get it. Lisa prides herself on “keeping it real” with clients, as they begin their path of self-discovery, emphasizing that honesty and sincerity are essential in developing trust within the therapeutic relationship. “You are you and that is enough for anyone to be loved”. Every person has a unique story that deserves to be heard and understood. Lisa is there to listen when you are ready.
Education & Experience
Born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, Lisa began crusading for social justice at an early age with volunteer work and political activism. Lisa received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland in 1996. In college, she volunteered at the Help Center and the Sexual Assault Hotline, providing peer and community support.
Lisa moved to St. Louis, Missouri to attend Washington University, earning her Master of Social Work in 1998. Advancing her passion for advocacy, she did field work in the court system as a victim’s advocate and in the community as a mentor and therapist for children and families experiencing separation and divorce.
In 2000, Lisa relocated to Pittsburgh to begin her tenure with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). In the nearly 20 years that she has been there, Lisa has worked in four different hospitals within the UPMC health system, sharing her collaboration skills with multiple professional disciplines and patient populations. In her current role at Magee Women’s Hospital, she supports countless women during pregnancy and postpartum. She is trained in Critical Incident and Stress Management and serves on the Mom and Cops Committee, the Employee Experience Committee, and the DV/IPV Task Force.
Hobbies & Interests
Mental health and physical health are inextricably linked. Exercise improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. Whether it’s taking a long walk with her husband, exercise classes, or working out on her own, Lisa maintains a weekly healthy living routine. Finding a balance between work and leisure is also integral in promoting self-care and mindfulness. Dolly Parton says: “Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”. Lisa also enjoys spending her free time with family, two dogs (Coco and Benji), reading, and binge-watching Netflix.
