Carla Deem
Hello, I’m Carla Deem, LPC-ATR. I believe in building a positive rapport, allowing you to feel comfortable and laugh, while still being able to approach the tough challenges you face. I am someone who enjoys using humor in a session to help cut tension and invite a more relaxing feeling. With a background in counseling and art therapy, I enjoy using art therapy as it accesses different parts of the brain, which can make it easier to process emotions and experiences that are difficult to express verbally. The goal is never to create masterpieces, rather using art as a tool to explore feelings and thoughts that might be hard to put into words alone.
I work with clients of all ages, from children as young as 10 to older adults, and have extensive experience with depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, eating disorders, and other mental health diagnoses. My mission is to treat each client uniquely, providing a personalized treatment plan that fits your specific needs and comfort level. I regularly check in with you throughout our work together to make sure therapy feels right for you.
I understand how much pain and isolation mental health challenges can cause, and I want you to know that help is available. Many people new to therapy worry about being judged or shamed for what they’re experiencing. I want to assure you that there is absolutely no shame in your experience or in seeking help. While receiving a mental health diagnosis can feel intimidating, taking that step to get support is actually incredibly brave and shows your strength.
Education and Experience
I hold a Master’s degree in Art Therapy with a specialization in counseling from Seton Hill University, along with Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Art from Davis and Elkins College. I’m committed to staying current with new techniques and approaches, and I’m always seeking opportunities to further my education and professional development.
Hobbies and Interests
Outside of work, I’m quite a nerd! I enjoy playing video games, watching TV, and collecting anime novelties. I’ve found that these hobbies actually help me connect better with teenage clients since we often share similar interests.
