Barbara Torango, M.Ed, A.T., L.P.C, is an Art Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor. Barbara graduated with her Master’s degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. She holds a clinical license to practice and has been serving others in their healing and wellness for over 25 years, her vast experience has focused on working with adolescents, children, individual adults, families, and groups. She also is an expert in helping families manage the impact of anxiety and depression in children and teens and working with caregivers to support their positive emotional health. As an expert in the field of counseling children and families, Barbara recognizes that each family is unique and composed of various members in the union of their best effort to love and support each other, we are proud to serve all forms of diverse families.
Barbara has implemented treatment including many forms of art therapy including individual sessions as well as groups for children. Art therapy can supported the emotional wellness of the children by strategically targeting the symptoms associate with many mental health diagnosis and other emotional concerns such as grief, self-control, anger management, processing of feelings, adoption, processing the impact of divorce, and enhancing self-esteem. Children enjoy these groups because they don’t feel so alone when others share their feelings and concerns. She also does art therapy assessments for diagnostic purposes in order to determine if a child qualifies for the diagnosis of anxiety, depression, and trauma. These assessments can reveal a lot of information that clients will not or cannot share, for whatever reason.
Barbara takes an eclectic and evidence based approach with her clients based on their individual needs to decrease suffering, enhance behavioral control and lead them toward a path where they are able to fulfill their potential. She highlights and honors her clients and ensures that her clients are the foremost important member of the therapeutic team by respecting their input and priorities. This whole family and systemic approach fosters a collaborative environment in order to bring the children and adults that she works with into a place of balance, emotional health, and whole family wellness.
In her personal life, Barbara is a proud mother to one adult daughter whom lives in Scotland with her husband. Barbara is a multi-media artist and enjoys using her spare time to create drawings and paintings, additionally she is a classically trained piano and keyboard player. For fitness, she likes to enhance her own wellness by practicing cardio and running, she has run two half marathons here in Pittsburgh and Monroeville.
