Joe Marzano, MA, LPC, CAADC has been assisting individuals, couples and families reach their fullest potential for over 20 years. His substance abuse counseling philosophy embraces the reality that addiction is not simply a decision one makes, but that it contains a host of contributing factors. These including, but are not limited to: genetics, health, environment, experience, chemistry and biology. Because he understands there is no single cause of addiction, he also knows there is no one right way to battle it. This is why his recovery plans are inclusive and in depth. If you are seeking help and guidance in dealing with a personal addiction or an addiction of those around you; Joe can offer his significant experience in helping you learn how to navigate the ups and downs of recovery.
Addiction does not only affect the addict; its arms are long reaching. It can have serious consequences that can reach into the lives of family and friends. Having a loved one actively engaged in addictive behavior can rip relationships apart. Joe has a strong desire to help those interested in resolving this pain and provide support through couples therapy and marriage counseling
Joe’s goal is to help his clients maximize their abilities and resources. He utilizes techniques to assist clients identify faulty or unhealthy ways of thinking. He will help identify learned patterns that contribute to negative behaviors and facilitate more effective coping skills to relieve clients of their pain (Cognitive Behavior Therapy). He encourages clients to focus on their needs and aids them in developing strong, healthy connections to other people. Joe assists in helping his clients understand, that though we cannot control how we feel, we can control what we think and how we act.
His sessions revolve around a clients’ desire to change (Reality Therapy). He approaches those he sees, with empathy and understanding. His hope is that individuals can learn to explore the discrepancies between how they want their lives to be versus how their lives are currently. His process is individually driven, as he promotes autonomy (Motivational Interviewing). He knows that traumatic events often shape people’s perspective of the world around them. He integrates this understanding into the care of his clients (Trauma Informed Care).
He understands that people are incredibly complex and that no two people or situations are exactly the same. He strongly believes that counseling needs to focus on a person as a “whole.” This includes the mind, the body and the spirit. Joe has excelled in the many facets of and modalities of counseling. His experience and training allow him to facilitate healing from depression, anxiety, trauma, marital and couples’ conflicts, adjustment disorders, spiritual needs as well as addictions of all kinds.
Education & Experience
Joe received his education from Liberty University in Lynchburg Virginia. He lived there for a total of seven years. During that time, he completed his Masters of Arts in Professional Counseling. Joe came back to Pennsylvania in 2003 to care for his ailing mother who subsequently passed. Upon his return, he continued his education, earning a Certification in Addictions from Waynesburg University.
Joe is the Clinical Supervisor for our Greensburg location. He provides comprehensive systemic supervision to licensed and pre-licensed therapists.
Hobbies & Interests
Joe was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming and raised in southwestern Pennsylvania. He was brought up in an Italian American home where he developed his love for food, cooking and family. He spends much of his free time with family; eating, laughing and joking. He enjoys the outdoors. He likes to shoot, hunt and fish. Joe hopes to one day ride a Harley across the country. Joe’s world view has been shaped by his faith and upbringing. He understands that people are hurting and that we all have a responsibility to help where we can. It’s because of this belief that he chose the counseling field, as his life’s pursuit.
For many people spirituality is much more than going to a building one day a week. It is something essential to who they are. It is the compass that guides the decisions they make and how they engage in their environment. For others it may be a part of themselves they would like to explore more deeply. You do not have to have a spiritual preference or denomination. Joe is willing to explore this belief system with you. He respects all denominations, religions and belief systems, as they are your right to choose.
