Unsa Memon, M.Ed, LPC, NCC, CTP, understands that as human growth occurs, it is a universal truth that we as human beings encounter various adversities. As a mental health therapist, Unsa believes that while these hardships take place, the way one internalizes and responds has a significant impact on overall well-being. She also places value on the sociocultural factors that play a role in internalizing, reacting, and coping to various stressors and traumatic events. Her interest in examining help-seeking behavior and how that is influenced by sociocultural factors allows her to be open and comfortable in working with clients who come from different walks of life. Unsa is very passionate about helping clients navigate and guide them to explore healthier ways of coping with various mental health conditions.
Additionally, Unsa also knows that clinical therapy is not only for those who have experienced adversities, but it is also helpful for self-exploration and the goal of maturation. She is a champion of the relationship between a client and a therapist; without it, Unsa believes no therapeutic endeavor can be successful. Unsa approaches a therapeutic relationship with warmth, acceptance, and active listening.
Unsa has successfully worked with all ages, from college aged students, as well as elementary to high school aged kids. She also has specialized experience in working with kids who have special needs and neurodevelopmental conditions. Unsa has a long standing experience in working with families overcome issues such communication problems and helping the family adjust to medical or mental health diagnosis. She uses an eclectic multicultural approach. She has used cognitive behavioral therapy, applied behavior analysis techniques, family-based therapy, person-centered, motivational interviewing, mindfulness therapy, and trauma informed techniques to examine various emotional disorders in a therapeutic setting.
Education & Experience
Unsa received her bachelors in Psychology with a concentration in mental health from Southern New Hampshire University. She earned her masters from Pennsylvania State University in Counselor Education and specialized in clinical rehabilitation and mental health counseling. During her educational career, she was an intern as a school-based therapist as well as an in-clinic clinician at the university’s one of two counseling centers.
Furthermore, she published three articles in the Rho Alpha Mu (Penn State Chapter for counseling honor society) newsletter. Unsa was also involved in research for the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. The research focused on the diversity issues at OVR and how to bring about change. Unsa was also voted as secretary for the Counseling Honor Society Rho Alpha Mu chapter, and additionally served as Vice President for the Pakistani Student Association at Penn State. As far as international experience is concerned, Unsa was fortunate enough to intern at Aga Khan University’s Psychiatric Department (Karachi, Pakistan). This experience gave her insight on how mental health is viewed in Pakistan and the way mental health care is practiced.
Hobbies & Interests
Unsa values spending time with her husband and son. In her free time, you can find Unsa crafting, experimenting with resin art, going on trails with her husband, and enjoying what reality TV has to offer. Unsa maintains her wellness by taking care of her diet and exercising regularly.
