Kelsey Counihan
Kelsey Counihan, MSW, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, PA Chapter and is a Certified Advanced Grief Counseling Specialist. Kelsey offers individual counseling and specializes in grief counseling as well as anxiety treatment and depression in adults. Kelsey is trained in cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing.
Kelsey also has experience in guided meditation and stress reduction techniques. Kelsey’s counseling philosophy is designed to help you feel comfortable exploring difficult issues while creating new strategies to deal with life’s challenges. Counseling with Kelsey involves a thorough biopsychosocial assessment to ensure that her clients’ needs are being met.
Education & Experience
Throughout Kelsey’s career, she has experience helping individuals and families work through their most complex life situations. Kelsey developed a love for helping those in need while becoming involved with Habitat for Humanity, religious and other community-based organizations as a teenager. This led her to a career in social work. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social work from Slippery Rock University and she continued her education earning a master’s degree from California University of Pennsylvania in social work. After graduating, Kelsey earned her LSW, becoming a licensed social worker.
In her four years as a social worker, she has worked with clients of all ages, from 2 to 102. She started her career with an internship at a community counseling center working with adults and children. After her graduation from Slippery Rock, Kelsey worked with children and their families as a therapeutic support specialist. In her graduate internship, Kelsey worked as a behavioral specialist consultant working with clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
After earning her master’s degree, she continued to develop her skills through her transition to hospital social work. During the next three years, in the hospital setting, she had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of clients who dealt with anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, grief, end of life care, death, substance abuse, domestic abuse and homelessness. Kelsey helped patients and their families during the most difficult moments of their lives. She continued to learn the importance of mental health through the COVID 19 pandemic as she worked with patients experiencing mental health and other psychosocial issues. Kelsey supported patients and their families providing emotional support during the difficult times that the pandemic presented.
Hobbies & Interests
Kelsey believes in the importance of overall physical and mental well-being. She believes that exercise, nutrition, good sleep habits, and stress reduction can be important factors in wellness. When Kelsey is not working, she enjoys doing high intensity interval training workouts as well as doing outdoor activities. Kelsey especially enjoys taking cooking classes and experimenting with new recipes. Kelsey enjoys meeting new people and working with others to learn new cooking skills. She believes in the importance of doing stress reduction techniques. Kelsey enjoys participating in meditative activities and craft projects. She also enjoys attending outdoor festivals, concerts and spending time with friends and family.
