James T. O’Neil
Hello, my name is James T. O’Neil, MA, NCC, LPC, and I’m a mental health professional with over 10 years of experience supporting individuals and couples on their journeys toward growth and healing. My clinical expertise spans adult mental health services and addiction counseling, where I help clients navigate challenges such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, grief, domestic violence, and substance use disorders.
My therapeutic approach is grounded in evidence-based practices tailored to foster meaningful change. I frequently use Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), empowering clients to harness their strengths and resources to find practical solutions to life’s challenges. I also incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a proven method for addressing the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Through CBT, clients learn to recognize and shift negative thought patterns, fostering healthier coping mechanisms and improved emotional well-being.
For couples, I utilize the Gottman Method, a research-based framework designed to enhance communication, deepen emotional intimacy, and resolve conflicts constructively. My goal is to support partners in building stronger, more fulfilling relationships.
I believe in the resilience and potential for growth within every individual and relationship. My role is to equip my clients with the tools they need to manage their mental health, strengthen their relationships, and create positive, lasting change. Whether you’re facing mental health challenges, addiction, trauma, or relationship difficulties, I’m here to collaborate with you in achieving your goals and building a healthier, more fulfilling life.
Education and Experience
I hold a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Slippery Rock University, with a concentration in Adult Mental Health and Addictions. After completing my graduate studies, I earned recognition as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and became a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). These credentials reflect my dedication to professional excellence and my commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based care to individuals and families navigating mental health and addiction challenges.
Prior to entering the counseling field, I spent 12 years in emergency medical services (EMS), where I encountered high-stress situations and gained firsthand exposure to mental health conditions. My time in EMS provided invaluable insight into how individuals cope with stress, the demands faced by providers in the field, and the emotional toll of these experiences. This background has greatly shaped my therapeutic approach, particularly when working with individuals dealing with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and addiction. It reinforced the importance of creating a supportive, approachable environment where clients can process difficult emotions and achieve their treatment goals.
In addition to my work in EMS, I serve in the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR), which has deepened my understanding of resilience and provided insight into the unique challenges faced by military service members and their families. This experience has given me a profound appreciation for the stressors associated with military service and first responder roles, allowing me to provide compassionate, informed care to those in these demanding fields.
I also have experience supporting individuals affected by domestic violence, both in shelter and outpatient settings. My career includes working in dual-diagnosis residential programs, assisting individuals and their families in navigating addiction and mental health disorders. Furthermore, I have worked extensively with families in the foster care system, as well as couples and individuals seeking marriage counseling.
Each of these roles has enriched my understanding of the diverse challenges people face and has strengthened my commitment to helping clients build resilience, achieve their goals, and create meaningful change in their lives.
Hobbies and Interests
In my free time, I enjoy tackling renovation projects, honing my woodworking skills, and unwinding with video games. Whenever the opportunity arises, my favorite pastime is traveling to new destinations and immersing myself in the experience of exploring the world around me.
