Where Did Halotherapy and Salt Therapy Originate?
Halotherapy or Dry Salt Therapy traces its roots to the salt caves of Europe and Russia in the 1800s. The miners experienced natural health benefits from inhaling micro-sized salt particles below the Earth’s surface, leading to a range of positive effects on their well-being.
The first salt therapy health resort, focusing on asthma treatment, was developed in 1839 in Poland. Other types of salt therapies followed in the early to mid 1900s and in 1985 the first Halotherapy device was developed at the Institute of Balneology in Russia. Thanks to this technological innovation, modern day Halotherapy emerged.

What is Halotherapy?
Halotherapy, or Dry Salt Therapy, utilizes a halogenerator—a device that grinds 99.99% pure-grade dry pharmaceutical sodium chloride into micron-sized particles and regulates the salt aerosol and concentration levels for effective treatment.
True Halotherapy, however, goes beyond mere salt décor elements like Himalayan brick walls or individual salt lamps. These decorations, while beautiful, do not purify the air or release negative ions, as per scientific research.
Furthermore, clinical studies emphasize the importance of using pure grade sodium chloride for optimal benefits. Himalayan salt, while popular, will not provide the same therapeutic effects. Particle size and concentration levels are critical factors in reaping the medicinal benefits of Halotherapy.
Our state-of-the-art Salt Cave in Monroeville and Cranberry ensure adherence to these guidelines, offering numerous health benefits. In fact, in many European countries, Halotherapy is recognized as a medical treatment covered by healthcare and insurance programs.
We take pride in offering real and effective Halotherapy with a commercial-grade halogenerator. Additionally, we are members of The Salt Therapy Association, that was formed to provide Education, Research, and Innovation for the Salt therapy Halotherapy industry.

How and Why Does Halotherapy Work?
Halotherapy harnesses the natural properties of salt to promote wellness and improve respiratory and skin health. Here’s how it works:
- Absorbency: Salt is highly absorbent, especially when it’s dry. In halotherapy, pure sodium chloride is ground into micro-sized particles and dispersed into the air using a halogenerator.
- Antibacterial: Salt has natural antibacterial properties, helping to cleanse and purify the air in the therapy room.
- Anti-inflammatory: Salt is also anti-inflammatory, which can help reduce inflammation in the respiratory system and improve breathing.
How Does Dry Salt Therapy Benefit You?
When you breathe in the salt-infused air during a Halotherapy session, the dry salt particles naturally start absorbing allergens, toxins, and impurities in your respiratory tract. This can help clear congestion, reduce inflammation, and improve breathing for conditions like allergies, asthma, bronchitis, and more.
Additionally, the antibacterial properties of salt benefit the skin, helping to alleviate conditions like acne, psoriasis, and eczema. The salt particles can also improve skin elasticity and promote cell rejuvenation.
Creating the Ideal Environment for Salt Therapy
To ensure the effectiveness of Halotherapy, the Salt Cave must maintain specific temperature and humidity levels, along with proper ventilation. This creates a clean-air environment that enhances the therapeutic benefits of Dry Salt Therapy.
Overall, Halotherapy offers a natural and holistic approach to wellness, providing relief for respiratory and skin conditions while promoting relaxation and rejuvenation for your mind and body.

A. Himalayan Salt lamps are beautiful and natural lamps. We love them!
However, there is no scientific evidence supporting the claimed health benefits of heated Himalayan salt. Moreover, the idea that it can release ions in quantities significant enough to influence the surrounding environment or assist in treating respiratory conditions contradicts established scientific principles and fundamental chemistry.
Some companies selling Himalayan salt lamps have made false claims regarding negative ions, air purification, sinus and allergy relief, etc. These claims have led to a Federal Class Action lawsuit.
