South Hills Counseling Center
Philicia Barbieri, MS, LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor providing therapy in our South Hills Counseling Center. Philicia provides effective therapy services to individuals, couples, and families by applying her holistic and integrative approach from her extensive training in professional counseling. Philicia is tirelessly passionate about the process of change as it relates to recovery from addiction, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. Philicia’s counseling journey began in 2013 as an addictions counselor at a well known drug and alcohol treatment facility. Philicia’s journey continued as a lead counselor, eventually ushering her to a local non-profit as a dual diagnosis treatment specialist providing community based treatment for those struggling with severe and pervasive mental health issues.
Philicia’s varied work in counseling has influenced her theoretical orientation greatly. She is grounded in existentialism and truly believes in each individual’s personal responsibility in creating meaning in their own lives, regardless of personal characteristics and identities. Philicia uses an integrated approach tailored to each client. Interventions are pulled from evidence based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Philicia values a measured clinical approach, always striving to maintain each individual’s personal dignity, fostering a therapeutic relationship built on mutual respect, and meeting each client where they are at. Philicia also feels strongly about the stages of change (transtheoretical model).
Philicia also shares a passion for yoga, identifying the physical and emotional benefits akin to it’s practice. As a registered yoga teacher, Philicia is well versed in mindfulness, grounding, and the mind-body connection. She is adamant that yoga practice can be a benefit as a tool for recovery from a variety of mental health related concerns as well as its ability to promote wellness.
Philicia received her Master’s degree in Professional Counseling from Carlow University and has been devoted to the field of mental health ever since. Philicia displays the ability to effective heal individuals with a variety of mental health diagnosis and with various populations. She has particular interests in working with older adolescents, adults, and couples. Philicia is well versed in group therapy and has experience assisting others dealing with depression, anxiety, mild to severe substance abuse and dependence, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Philicia also works with individuals who may struggle with self concept or esteem, have difficulty at work, or family members who experience any of these issues vicariously.
When not working Philicia enjoys teaching yoga, reading, attending workshops, spending time outdoors walking and kayaking, and being at home with her boyfriend and two dogs.
