As a psychotherapist with a proven track record of over 17 years of helping clients heal, Joe Hegedus, LPC, has helped adults, children, and families overcome a variety of daily stressors and lifelong struggles. In addition to working within outpatient settings, he has also provided therapeutic support and collaboration within schools and other community settings throughout Allegheny County and Washington County. Joe’s professional counseling experience also includes supervisory and managerial roles within mental health organizations.
Joe approaches psychotherapy in a supportive and interpersonal manner. He utilizes an eclectic style, incorporating humanistic, existential, and cognitive-behavioral theories into the practice of helping clients develop solutions to problems. He facilitates an open and productive dialogue, set on talking through symptoms and towards solutions. Joe’s specialties include helping people heal from depression and anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, anger management problems, relationship challenges, and sleep issues. Joe’s experience also includes work with individuals diagnosed with personality disorders and psychotic disorders. Regardless of the the presenting problems, Joe is attentive and adaptive to the needs of his clients.
Joe has been trained in a multitude of intervention approaches, including Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Informed Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT), and several additional approaches and disciplines. Joe helps clients identify and implement self-care and positive coping activities into their efforts towards positive change by emphasizing whole-body health and healthy communication within relationships. He helps clients incorporate positive coping activities into personal routines, which serves to transform actions of conditioned reactivity into more controlled and productive responses, leading to reduced symptoms and stress and increased self-control. Joe has delivered effective therapy to children and families, adolescents, single adults, couples, and the elderly.
Joe believes that the intent of psychotherapy is to help clients incorporate positive changes into their lives. While he subscribes to evidence-based practices in professional counseling, he also operates in accordance to the individualized process of psychotherapy. Because human beings are unique, every client’s efforts towards change will also be unique. As such, Joe incorporates knowledge and experience into a personalized therapeutic encounter. He focuses on fostering a safe space that allows clients to openly process experiences and explore solutions to their problems.
A graduate of Duquesne University, Joe earned a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership and Behavior, followed by a Master of Arts in Psychology. He also attended Carlow University, where he earned an additional Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling.
Born and raised in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, Joe has developed a true appreciation for the Pittsburgh region. Joe’s early years were in spent in Castle Shannon and Mt. Lebanon, followed by a family move to Washington County during his formative years. He graduated from Trinity High School in Washington, PA.
Joe’s hobbies and interests are vast and diverse. His favorite activities include exploring abandoned sites, enjoying local parks, and travel. He is selectively active, inspired to lounge as often as he exercises. He savors long weekends on his couch as much as he enjoys physical activity. Joe’s ultimate inspiration is his young son, who brightens his world!
