Suzanne M Destfino is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and has been working in the mental health field for over 10 years. In that time, she has worked with just about every population and in multiple capacities including trauma informed care. As a certified K-12 school counselor she worked with children and their families in the Pittsburgh Public Schools at all levels. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in social sciences where she was able to focus on Women’s Studies, Africana Studies, and World Religions, and received her Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Chatham University. Suzanne considers herself to be a secular, strength-based, person-centered therapist and primarily works to help her clients find their inner strength and empower them to grow and develop skills they may not even realize they have. She believes that the individual client, couple, or family is the expert and the therapist is the guide in a successful team leading to recovery from any issue.
Suzanne’s strengths in practice lie in the mind-body connection built from a solid relationship between therapist and client where trust, growth, honesty, and transparency form the foundation for powerful change and self-awareness with no room for judgment. She practices trauma-informed therapy with every client and her specialties include PTSD, addiction, anxiety and mood disorders, aging, parenting and co-parenting, couples and relationships, families, multicultural issues, LGBTQIA, anger management, and helping her clients discover themselves and gain the most out of life.
In addition to using evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Suzanne has an eclectic style of therapy that includes existential theories including holistic practices to meet each client where they are. Currently she is working toward becoming certified in Trauma Informed Yoga and often finds body and breath work to be beneficial in treatment.
Suzanne will always be a California girl at heart having been born in the beautiful northern part of the state near the ocean cliffs and redwood trees. While she has lived many places, she does find the seasons of Pittsburgh and its history quite charming. Suzanne enjoys traveling and photography, bodies of water, and most things related to culture, creativity, and nature. She works very hard to maintain a balance between home and work and for motivation and stress relief she does partake in terrible kitchen dancing. She also enjoys cranking up the music and giving the inside of her car some amazing vocal performances. Suzanne is involved in an ongoing quest to become a master of self-care while learning and evolving as a psychotherapist and individual; However, she tries to never take herself so seriously that she forgets to laugh.
Suzanne joined the Counseling and Wellness Center of Pittsburgh team upon the opening of the Greensburg office and is so excited to be accepting individuals, couples, and families. She offers a flexible schedule and is willing to work with you to find a time to meet. She is waiting to help you become the best version of yourself!
