Teen Counseling South hills Pittsburgh
Counseling and Wellness Center of Pittsburgh South Hills, welcomes Brenda Cappy Gruhn, LPC, NCC to our Canonsburg location. One of Brenda’s favorite quotes is by Mr. Fred Rogers who repeated what his mother told him when he was a little boy, “When bad things happen, look to the helpers.” Everyone has “bad” things happen in life sometimes. For children and teens, it’s often very difficult to process life’s problems and traumas and sometimes they need “a helper” in order to gain the skills they need to do so. Brenda is one of those helpers! She has dedicated herself to working with children, adolescents and teens to help them become their best selves and learn the skills needed to live mentally and emotionally healthy lives.
Brenda’s approach to working with children and teens is focused on empathy, compassion, mindfulness and understanding. She utilizes a variety of therapeutic techniques and incorporates art therapy, music, books and games into sessions to fully engage children in the therapeutic process. Brenda believes parents should play an integral role in their child’s treatment planning and implementation of goals. Her areas of expertise include helping children, adolescents and teens who struggle with anxieties, grief and loss, divorce/changing families, stress management, general coping skills, self-esteem, depression, self-regulation of feelings and behaviors, and relational problems with family and peers. Brenda is committed to helping children and adolescents become mentally well and learn the skills they need to be the best they can be currently and as they grow into happy and stable young adulthood. She would welcome the opportunity to work with and help your child be the best he or she can be!
Brenda is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Pennsylvania certified professional school counselor with nearly twenty years of experience working with children, adolescents and families in both public schools and outpatient settings. She is also a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) through the National Board for Certified Counselors. Brenda earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Point Park University and holds a master’s degree in Counseling from the University of Pittsburgh. She is currently a PhD candidate at Indiana University of Pennsylvania majoring in Counselor Education and Supervision and will soon be a psychologist specilizing in children and family mental health. Brenda’s thesis is on the use of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) Techniques with children. She is glad to help you and your family work your way to wellness.
